钱老认为，在相当长的时间内，人类的宇宙航行活动只能局限在太阳系内，“宇宙航行”不免夸大。同时受到毛主席的诗句：“巡天遥看一千河”的启发，便将人类在大气层以外的飞行活动称为“航天”，这也是对“巡天”一词的延伸。
